Everything from light to sugar free to low fat to calorie free! Some of these products can be a great additives to a sensible diet...others can wreak havoc on the body if consumed out of moderation. Here is a list of my top five "New Food" products that you can find on your supermarket shelves.

1. Weight Control Oatmeal. With 6 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein..this packaged oatmeal is the king of breakfast options. Comes in three great flavors-Banana Bread, Cinnamon and maple syrup.

2. Wasa Crackers (7 grain). Even though I hear many say "Wasa crackers taste like card board," this latest selection is quite the opposite. The new 7 grain Wasa crackers have a slight softer mouthful with an apple taste. Apple extract is added to give it this flavor. Plus, three crackers are only 60 calories! Add some low fat cheese or natural peanut butter and you have yourself a new healthy snack.

3. Minute Ready Brown Rice. This precooked 1 cup serving of rice can be consumed anytime/anywhere! With 170 calories and lots of fiber ,the ready rice can be cooked in a microwave in just 60 seconds! Try with a side of 3 oz chicken, turkey, or fish to compete your meal.

4. Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter. This is one of the most natural peanut butters you can find. There are only three ingredients (peanuts, salt and oil). Most importantly this product is free of transfat. Try natural peanut butter on a mini bagel, crackers, an apple or celery as a healthy snack alternative. Just remember to stay within moderation, as it still contains 100 calories per Tablespoon. Other great brands (Smart Balance, and Skippy Natural)

5. Laughing Cow Cheese. This cheese is often overlooked in many grocery stores. You can usually find it by the specialty cheeses and/or deli meat isle. Look for the low fat version which supplies only 30 calories per triangle slice. Laughing Cow Cheese is a good source of calcium and protein and a great additive to spread on crackers, toast, or veggies!

If there are any other great "new food items" that you have tried and are healthy please post!
                                                                                                                                                 -Jim

Welcome to Jim White's Fitness Pulse Blog!

Jim White (Fitness Studio Owner, Personal Trainer and Registered Dietitian) will be posting timely articles, news items, event info, videos and more in his new blog.
