    Meet James Balam. In August of 2011, I wanted to answer the question, "Can I change my cholesterol numbers on my own?" Having been a college athlete and blessed with a high metabolism, I've been in shape my whole life. But my doctor would have given my HDL and LDL numbers a grade of D. Next move? Combine a rigorous workout schedule with a specific diet . That led me to Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios. Once my wife and I sat down with Jim, a certified dietitian, we were on our way.

    My goal was to hit it hard and get some blood work done in four months. Well, I was psyched when my numbers improved 25% and my new grade was a B. I'm now a firm believer that the primary focus should be what you eat. Of course, a strong weekly training program is added into the equation for success.

    With Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios, I achieved the results I was looking for. Special thanks to Jeremy; he understood my intense pace and worked to push me beyond it. And to my loving wife Arleyne who does all the cooking!

    In the Summer of 2011, I experienced some health issues that resulted in me going to a Cardiologist. Even though I exercised on a regular basis, I was overweight and my blood pressure was extremely high. My son Ethan was 10 at the time, and I decided that I needed to make some changes. I met with Jim White, and after talking to him about nutrition, lifestyle and exercise, it was obvious that he knew his business. I began working with Jeremy Moore, one of Jim's trainers, and as the next several months went by, I saw tremendous improvement in how I looked and felt. I lost almost 40 pounds between September 1 and the end of the year, and my blood pressure and cholesterol are not a problem now. I was 51 when I started, and I definitely feel a lot younger now. Making the decision to come and see Jim was the best thing I could have done, for myself and for my family.

    In February of 2011 I was 335lbs, out of shape, out of breath and feeling bad about myself. My wife suggested that we check out Jim White Fitness because a friend if hers was having remarkable results with them.

    We went in for a consultation and Jim talked to us about our nutrition and about what a regular schedule of fitness could do for us. He made me believe that I could affect a change in both my bodily health and my mental well being. He took into account what types of foods we enjoyed and crafted a very sensible and easy to follow diet. Then he paired us up with our trainer Carol.


    She has been wonderful and without her dedication, willingness to work with both our strengths and weaknesses, and amazing sense of humor I don't think we would have been able to make the amazing transformation that we've seen in ourselves.

    As of this writing I have lost 95 lbs and am stronger and healthier than I have ever been in my life. And the amazing thing is that I still have a ways to go and can't wait to see what remarkable things I will be able to accomplish.

    We realized that we were not living up to the standards we believed in. Not only were we unhappy with the way we looked, but we always felt lousy. So we finally decided to do something about it. We agreed to be in this together as a team, and hold each other accountable. We went to JWFNS and got our measurements done and a big touch of motivation. We started working out six days per week, and ate an extremely clean diet. Once a week (usually on Friday), we enjoy a "reward" meal, which consists of anything we want, in whatever amount we desire.     Jimmy and Casi have been long-time advocates of leading a healthy lifestyle. They enjoy their leisure time by indulging in fine food, fine wine and the greater tastes in life. They both started with Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios and transformed their bodies while maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

    My appearance is definitely much leaner since I started working out with Jim White Fitness. My chest and arms have gained inches where we have targeted workouts, and my waistline has dropped a couple of inches (two pant sizes). Overall, I've seen an increase in stamina and energy. My workout consists of lifting two days a week for an hour, with 20 minutes of cardio, and the other four days, I do 30 minutes of cardio (cross training with running, elliptical and spin).

    Even though I love to occasionally indulge in Italian food, I choose to snack wisely. If you want to experience how great this feels, be prepared and have healthy choices surrounding you constantly throughout the day so you make good choices.     When I called JWFNS, I had a few goals in mind... I wanted to drop at least 20 pounds, loose a few inches from my waist, get fit, decrease my rising cholesterol and learn to eat right. Jim, Marley, (especially Marley), Sue, Eric, and Jamel have all helped me to meet every one of my goals within just a few months.

    I am now off cholesterol lowering medicine, my energy level is up,  I look forward to my workouts and enjoy eating a proper diet.

    My two daughters also joined JWFNS and we have fun comparing workouts, meal ideas and bragging about inches and pounds lost. I cannot say enough about what a great staff Jim has... their expertise, dedication and encouragement to reach my goals and maintain them is without match.

    For the last several years, I found myself gaining 1-2 pounds from eating almost anything I wanted. Meanwhile, with heart disease running in my family, my cholesterol numbers were bad and getting worse.

    After my doctor, wife, and a close friend all commented to me that I had been "putting on a few pounds," I knew I needed to do something. Four months ago, I went to the Jim White Fitness website and saw stories of others' transformations. I scheduled an appointment with Eric, signed up for workouts with Jeremy, and had a nutrition counseling and education session with Sue.
    Four months later, the results have been fantastic! I have lost about 10% of my body weight and lost 3-4" off my waist.  My cholesterol numbers have noticeably improved and my overall fitness is at least where it was when I graduated from college, if not the best it has ever been.

    I've been surprised at how much I enjoy eating healthier, losing weight, and meeting my fitness goals. I've surpassed all of my goals and with help from Jeremy and the rest of the JWNFS staff, I'm setting new ones and look forward to achieving them, knowing I've come so far already!

    My fitness goals started with a desire to change how I felt physically and how I felt about myself. I started going to the gym at the recreation center, but with no real goals or plan other than wanting to change.

    I met Marley at JWFNS, and she was responsive to the questions I had and receptive to my concerns. I liked the positive attitude I was greeted with when I came in, an attitude that advocated success. I determined that with a little motivation to begin with, personal training was the right approach to give me that "umph" I needed to really get the ball rolling. I came to the studio convinced that there were things I couldnʼt do, like runing. Guidance and encouragement is what helped me break those barriers and with Marleyʼs guidance, I become a slimmer and prouder shadow of my former self. I have been given new guidelines for a healthier life, ones that I continually strive to maintain daily.

    One year later, 35 pounds lighter, and 2 races finished, I find myself continuing a routine that Marley helped me establish and am now a recreational runner. The thing I was once convinced Iʼd never achieve, has been achieved... Iʼm training for my first half-marathon.

    During the global financial crisis 2007 to 2009 my company crashed, my investments shrank, and my waistline expanded. My doctor told me my cholesterol level was worse than 95% of Americans and put me on Crestor. I called Jim White Fitness December 2009. Patty at JWFNS quickly convinced me to change my diet. She helped me build a nutrition and exercise plan. The plan was lose two pounds per week. She would text me mid-week to check up on my progress.

    Patty and Jim insisted that I join the Jim White Team to compete in the 2010 Shamrock 8K. Now I love to run and compete in every race I can find. My wife noticed my progress began working with Patty and Jim... now she is in the best shape of her life. I lost 40 pounds in less than 6 months. Now my body fat percentage is top 95%, I don't take cholesterol medicine, and I'm never hungry.

    As I approached turning 40 I was becoming more and more distressed at my “forty”-year-old stamina and waist line. I am only 5’7" and had reached a weight of 204 pounds in the spring of 2009. I had also outgrown my size 36 inch waist pants.

    In September 2009 I started with JWFNS with a cholesterol level over 300 and weighing 189 pounds. Jim prescribed me a new diet and exercise plan. I immediately began working out with Jim and Chris two days a week and following the diet plan.  In addition, I added two days of cardio conditioning a week on my own. 

    Nine months later I weigh 162 pounds and wear 31 inch pants! My cholesterol, without the help of medication, is now 152. I continue to enjoy working with Jim and Chris and have now set new goals to rebuild my body as it should be. Without the nutritional consultation and expert workout advice I received I’d still be drinking beer while riding my stationary bike in front of the TV. The entire experience has been a positive one.     At age 17, I weighed 227.5 pounds and was gaining weight each month. I had a resting heartbeat of 99 and my blood pressure was not good in any way. I finally decided to see a personal trainer and see how I can improve my health and life. At first, I was so nervous that I skipped my first two consultations and I almost completely gave up on myself, but Eric never gave up on me. He called repeated times until we finally met. I told him that I did not think I could even run a mile.

    After a hard few months, the results began to show and I started to lose weight. At times Eric gave me that extra boost of encouragement when I had a bad week or two. Nine months later, I had lost over 70 pounds and went from a size 42 pants to a 33. My resting heartbeat is now down to a 66 and my blood pressure has improved drastically. I am now the person that I have always wanted to be. I have kept the weight off and now I run cross-country for my school. I owe it all to Eric and the staff at Jim White Fitness.     One word—unbelievable! I have spent the last 20 years at the gym spinning my wheels. It wasn't until I started training with Jim White that I started to see real results.     Measuring success strictly by numbers is easy: 35 pounds lighter, six waist sizes smaller, seven percent reduced body fat. What is more, the first four months I was in a cast for a ripped foot tendon, so my results are astounding considering the cardio limitations. Intangible benefits are the real advances most impressive. More stamina, endurance, confidence, and an overall better outlook contribute to a quality of life in so many ways truly not quantified mathematically.     Despite being very athletic, Grant had always struggled with weight gain. He had tried countless diets and worked with personal trainers in the past, but to no avail. When he was 13 years old and 166 pounds, Grant came to Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios. After three months of intense workouts, Grant looked and felt much better. However, the scale only reflected a small amount of weight loss. With the encouragement of his trainer, Chris, along with the entire staff, Grant continued to persevere. As Grant began to incorporate more nutritious food selection into his diet, the weight quickly began to come off. Over the next several months, Grant was losing about two pounds per week. He has lost over 35 pounds and his lifestyle has completely transformed. Fitness and nutrition have become part of his daily routine and I know it will continue to be part of his future.

    I met Jim and started training with him several years ago. Just when Jim and I started seeing results, I had an unexpected move to Roanoke, VA, for a job. Not long after the move, I soon became out of shape and my weight increased to an undesirable level. Once again I found myself dialing up Jim, begging for help.

    I came back to Virginia Beach to meet with Jim. He wrote out my fitness and nutrition plan and provided motivation even though we were miles apart. When I began this time around, I weighed 168 pounds, had a 35 inch waist, my body fat was 18 percent. I followed Jim's workout and nutrition plan very closely over a 4 month period. I met with Jim at his studio on July 10, 2009 and was very excited to show him the progress I had made.

    With Jim's steady guidance, motivation and 4 months of hard work, my weight dropped to 140 pounds, a 29 inch waist, and my body fat had dropped to 8.7 percent! I was once again able to take my shirt off and feel confident in the way I looked, no matter where I was or who was around!     Before Jim White Fitness, I could not even do a single pull-up. In fact, my entire life I have been unable to do a single one. When I started at Jim White, my trainer Eric set me up with a very specific meal plan and exercise regiment. It was very easy to follow and I started losing weight fast.     At 37 years young, I reached my peak weight of 293 pounds. I had mild sleep apnea, high cholesterol, and increased doctor visits for anxiety, stress, allergies, and joint pain.
